Description

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office is currently seeking qualified candidates for a Firearms Examiner. The Firearms Examiner is a critical member of the MCSO Crime Lab responsible for conducting forensic examinations of firearms and firearms-related evidence. This includes function testing, microscopic comparison of bullets and cartridge casings, serial number restoration, data entry, and expert courtroom testimony. The Examiner serves as the technical leader of the Firearms Section, ensuring adherence to accreditation standards, implementing best practices, and maintaining high-quality forensic analysis.

Key Responsibilities:
Firearms and Toolmark Analysis (60%)

  • Perform microscopic comparisons of bullets and cartridge cases to determine origin.
  • Function test and test-fire firearms to evaluate operational status.
  • Document findings using microphotography and written reports.
  • Participate in technical and administrative reviews for quality assurance.

Evidence Management (10%)

  • Receive, log, and store firearms-related evidence.
  • Verify submission accuracy and maintain chain-of-custody documentation.
  • Conduct audits of stored evidence to support lab accreditation compliance.

Administrative & Accreditation Duties (25%)

  • Maintain calibration logs, case records, and chemical expiration tracking.
  • Schedule and participate in pre-trial conferences and court testimonies.
  • Assist in internal audits, evidence inventories, and staff in-service training.

Courtroom Preparation and Testimony (5%)

  • Attend pre-trial conferences and participate in discovery proceedings.
  • Render credible testimony in criminal cases based on analysis conducted.
  • Attend trial for other firearms staff and perform audits of testimony for accreditation purposes.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Forensic Science, Chemistry, Biology, or a related scientific field.
  • Must be able to work independently on multiple tasks without supervision
  • Possess strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Must be able to successfully pass a skills proficiency assessment annually
  • Completion of a formal Firearms and Toolmark Examiner training program per AFTE standards.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in an accredited firearms lab post-training.
  • Current Texas Forensic Science Commission license as a Forensic Analyst (Firearms & Toolmarks)
  • Proficiency in NIBIN entry and analysis, microscopic comparisons, and forensic photography.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and resident of the contiguous United States for a period of time sufficient to conduct a background investigation
  • Must possess a current valid Texas driver's license and proof of liability insurance with no more than 3 moving violations in the past 3 years
  • No conviction above a Class B Misdemeanor or a Class B Misdemeanor within the last 10 years nor have been on or currently on court-ordered community supervision or probation for any criminal offense
  • Must be a team player and able to work collaboratively with others
  • May be exposed to outdoor weather conditions and moderate to loud noise level
  • Willingness to cross train & accept additional duties as assigned

 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • Day Shift, Monday – Friday
  • Split between laboratory, firearms test range, office, and evidence storage areas.
  • Regular exposure to noise, fumes, temperature variations, and potentially hazardous substances.
  • Requires lifting up to 30 lbs, extended use of microscopes, and manual dexterity.
  • Must be able to follow strict safety protocols at all times.
After receiving a conditional offer of employment applicant must pass the following before becoming an employee of Montgomery County:
  • a drug screen (1/2 cost = $26, responsibility of applicant)
  • a physical stress test (1/2 cost = $22.50, responsibility of applicant)
