Description
The Mechanic will diagnose, repair, program and maintain all the vehicles and equipment owned and operated by the Sheriff's Office personnel at or above OEM specifications. In this role, a Mechanic may perform a variety of tasks based on the type of vehicle and equipment such as: automotive, light and medium-duty diesel trucks, farm/agricultural equipment, small equipment such as motorcycles, ATV, UTV, boats, power generators and electrical golf carts, and light & messaging equipment.

*Pay is based on automotive certifications and experience. The pay range listed is subject to increase after probationary period and time-in-service.

Responsibilities
  • Perform diagnostic, service and repair of all electronic equipment and vehicles that includes diesel/gas engine diagnostics and repair; brake replacement and repair; air conditioning and heating repair; electrical repairs; tire replacement and repair; heavy line work and engine repair
  • Perform repair, install, and removal of emergency equipment such as light bar, push bumper, sirens, etc.
  • Perform maintenance inspections and light repairs involving, but are not limited to, minor adjustments, testing, measuring and/or replacement of parts and components
  • Major repairs can involve, but are not limited to, recondition and replacement of parts such as axles, pistons, bearing, gears, seals, valves, bushings and pumps using engine lathes, press machines, and various tools and precision measuring instruments. Replacement may require disassembly and/or reassembly of the engine, transmission, differential or hydraulic components
  • Repair malfunctions of fleet equipment and systems, including engine and drive systems, fuel, electrical, cooling, suspension, chassis and safety appliances, refrigerant recovery and recycling requirements of the Environmental Protection Agency
  • Performs road tests on equipment
  • Participates in activities and duties related to emergency management during a local state of emergency
  • Perform proper tire repair procedures specifically related to pursuit vehicles
  • Diagnose malfunctions through the utilization of advanced electronic and computerized diagnostic equipment of varied types and manufacturers
  • Safe handling of chemicals associated with fleet repair, parts and various systems (fuel, brake, cooling systems, etc.) cleaning solvents and lubricants
  • Read and interpret manufacturer schematics and vendor diagrams, manuals and specifications to complete installation and repair of complex fleet and heavy equipment related parts and systems
  • Use and maintain automotive tools and equipment utilized in automotive and heavy equipment maintenance and diagnostics
Qualifications
  • Applicants must have a High School Diploma or GED
  • Paid experience as a skilled automotive technician is preferred
  • Must have ASE certifications in Automotive A1-A8, or able to obtain within 6 months
  • GM, Ford, and Dodge training preferred
  • Experience in welding and fabrication preferred
  • Must possess knowledge of basic theories, practices, tools, parts, diagnostic equipment, and materials necessary for the effective maintenance and repair of fleet units   
  • Must be able to identify mechanical and electronic problems diagnose the source and extent of problems, make repairs, and offer a proper maintenance strategy
  • Modern engines and transmissions rely heavily on electronic systems to function. Fleet mechanics must be familiar with how the electronic systems operate and with the tools needed to work on them
  • Must be familiar with the growing number of electronic systems and sensors and possess extensive knowledge of computer controls
  • Must be familiar with parts and components of engines, transmissions, braking mechanisms, and other complex systems. Must also be able to disassemble, work on, and reassemble parts and machinery
  • Knowledge of varied types of generators including diesel
  • Must possess knowledge of workplace safety practices and regulations for operating mechanical and electrical equipment
  • Must be highly skilled in the use of computerized tuning/diagnostics
  • Must possess moderate skills in the use of desktop/personal computer systems and typing skills of 25 wpm preferred
  • Must have the ability to work under pressure and work well with others
  • Integrity, accuracy, and attention to detail is a must. Mechanical and electronic malfunctions often are due to misalignments or other errors.  Mechanics must therefore account for those problems when inspecting or repairing engines and/or components
  • Must be able to work with deadlines, working overtime if necessary
  • Must have analytical and troubleshooting skills
  • Will be required to sit, stand, walk, kneel, and type; must often lift or move heavy equipment, parts and tools without risking injury or fatigue. Must be able to safely lift 50 pounds alone, and 100 pounds with assistance
  • Typically located in a comfortable indoor & outdoor area. There may be regular exposure to dust, fumes, odors, temperature extremes, loud noise, strong drafts
  • Must be willing to accept additional duties as assigned
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and resident of the contiguous United States for a period of time sufficient to conduct a background investigation
  • Must possess a current valid Texas driver's license and proof of liability insurance with no more than 3 moving violations in the past 3 years
  • No conviction above a Class B Misdemeanor or a Class B Misdemeanor within the last 10 years nor have been on or currently on court-ordered community supervision or probation for any criminal offense
  • Applicant will be fingerprinted and subjected to a search of local, state, and U.S. national records and fingerprint files to disclose any criminal record and, may be subject to polygraph testing

Shift Hours: Monday - Friday, 7:00am- 4:00pm or 8:00am - 5:00pm
(Overtime may be required as needed. This position is considered "essential personnel," hours will change during times of local emergency events)

Additional Information: After receiving a conditional offer of employment applicant must pass the following before becoming an employee of Montgomery County:
  • a drug screen (1/2 cost = $26, responsibility of applicant)
  • a physical stress test (1/2 cost = $22.50, responsibility of applicant)
